At the
Hombu Dojo in Mesa-Gilbert, we offer
'TRADITIONAL' martial arts for adults, kids (
ages 6 to 12), & families.

Traditional martial arts are about the individual & their development. We believe it is important to focus on development of our kids as a person & to build their self-confidence. Thus the only competition in our school is with oneself. Kids are judged by how they progress individually.
When you & your child walk into the
Hombu, we will teach your child about traditions of Okinawan
karate - how to bow, when to bow, when to talk, how to address instructors, some Japanese language. In a short time, you will find your child will become concerned about being courteous to all people, both in and out of the school (
dojo). We will teach them the basics of
karate that will assist them in physical conditioning, self-confidence & building a foundation for self-defense as well as self-esteem.
We teach kara
te. Your child will learn the basics of
karate. They will learn to kick, block, punch &
kata (forms).
Sparring is not part of the children's class as this is a dangerous practice & not only can injure your child, it teaches improper technique & aggression. After 45 years of training, we found
kumite was over-used in most schools &
resulted in lack of focus & power. Your child is developing mentally & physically: it is our goal to be sure that they benefit from karate.
Prior to the age of 6, children should probably not take martial arts as there are possibilities of physical damage. So we only accept kids that are age 6 & above. We ask parents sit in the peanut gallery & observe and not coach your children as this makes it difficult to teach. Being that the kids classes are only 45 minutes, we ask parents to stay for the session. After a parent proves they can be part of our group, they may be asked to join the kids class as a silent member- we find this is a good bonding technique.
Karate training is about the person - the whole person (body & spirit). We emphasize
karate to never to be used against anyone except in self-defense. If all kids were trained in
traditional martial arts, we would have a better society.
After
traditional karate training, your kids will turn into
'tigers'
